Nick Krieger (@nckrieger):
Yesterday, I happened to come across State Representative Tim Kelly's Twitter account. And let me tell you—it's a veritable gold mine.
I have attached a particularly good tweet below:
1. No. No you did not pay the district's debt. You commandeered the local 18-mill school operating tax and statutorily forced the non-homestead property taxpayers of Detroit to pay off the debt.
2. No, you did not "restore their school board." The verb "restore" means to return something to its former place or condition. Think Charles II and 1660. You eliminated Detroit's school board and put in its place something completely novel and different. I hardly consider this to fall within the meaning of the word "restore." When you cut down an apple tree and plant a cherry tree in its place, you have not "restore[d]" the apple tree—even though both apples and cherries are tree fruits. That's just not how the English language works.
3. No, you did not "gift" $150M to the new district. The $150M is an emergency state loan that must be repaid by the local non-homestead property taxpayers of Detroit, just like the rest of the debt. It is simply not a "gift."
Now, you might not like Obama; I get that. But "radicalized"?? Like he's a terrorist or something?? Come on, representative! Can you believe this guy is serving in the Michigan Legislature?
